How long does THC stay in your body?

THC (tetrahydrocannabinol) can remain in the body for hours to weeks, depending on how much is used, how often, and the individual’s metabolism. THC vape produces fast effects that wear off in a few hours, but traces of THC can be detected in blood, urine, or hair for much longer.

Just keep in mind that half life of cannabinoids, including THC is quite long, and is generally more than 24 hours. So, on regular use, it keeps accumulating a bit in the system for few days. That is why, after few days of regular vaping, higher THC level is achieved in the body. This ensures optimal effect after few days, but it also means greater chances of detection by drug tests.

Immediate effects versus detection

When someone inhales THC, its effect usually lasts two to four hours. Edibles take longer to start working but may last up to eight hours. These are the noticeable effects, not the time THC remains in the body. Even after effects fade, THC is broken down into metabolites, which can be detected by common drug tests.

  • Blood: Detectable for up to 24 hours in occasional users.
  • Urine: Can show THC for several days in casual users, and weeks in heavy users.
  • Hair: May hold traces for months (but only after regular and repeated vaping, single or casual low THC vape might not show up in hair test at all), though this is less commonly tested.

Factors that influence how long THC stays

The time THC stays detectable depends on:

  1. Frequency of use: Regular users may build up THC in fat tissues, leading to longer detection windows.
  2. Amount used: Larger intakes increase the time THC metabolites remain measurable.
  3. Metabolism: Faster metabolisms clear THC more quickly.
  4. Method of use: Vaping tends to clear faster than edibles, since edibles create stronger and longer-lasting metabolites.

UK legal context

In the UK, THC is tightly controlled. Any product must contain less than 1 mg of THC per container to be legally sold without prescription. This is very different from the EU hemp cultivation limit of 0.2%, which does not apply to consumer products.

Practical implications for vape users

For most people using a legal low-THC vape in the UK, the amount of THC is too small to have lingering effects or significant test results. However, people using stronger cannabis products abroad should be aware of the extended detection times. If workplace or legal testing is a concern, even occasional use can leave a trace.
